USAID funds battery storage pilot for Lviv energy grid resilience
USAID's Ukraine Energy Security Project funded the installation of a 10 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system (BESS) for Lviv's regional electricity distribution network. The system, supplied by US manufacturer Powin Energy, entered service in March 2026. It is the first utility-scale BESS installation in western Ukraine.
The system is located at a distribution substation serving the Sykhiv residential district and Lviv's western industrial zone. It is designed to provide 90 minutes of backup power during grid outages — a critical function during Russian missile and drone attacks that periodically target Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
USAID's Ukraine Energy Security Project has committed $520 million to Ukrainian energy resilience since 2022. The Lviv BESS pilot is one of six distributed storage projects funded under the program's 2025–2026 cycle.
