Moldova power grid ENTSO-E synchronization fully operational
Moldova's national electricity transmission system operator Moldelectrica confirmed that the country's power grid is fully and permanently synchronized with the ENTSO-E European electricity network as of Q1 2026. The synchronization — which also covers Ukraine — disconnects both countries from the former post-Soviet IPS/UPS power system controlled substantially by Russian transmission operators.
The transition had been in an emergency trial synchronization since March 2022 and was confirmed as permanent in the first quarter of 2026 following completion of technical stabilization testing. The ENTSO-E synchronization gives Moldova direct access to European electricity markets and eliminates the vulnerability of operating on a grid that could be manipulated through Russian-controlled interconnections.
## Energy security significance
Moldova imports a significant share of its electricity needs from Romania and other EU suppliers. The ENTSO-E synchronization simplifies contractual arrangements for these imports and reduces technical constraints on cross-border power flow. The EU supported the synchronization through €70 million in technical and financial assistance.
